AbstractUrban growth modifies the land cover and the land use and causes changes in local climate. Natural cover is substituted by build materials like concrete and asphalt. Furthermore, human activities generate heat, particles and gases who will modify the atmosphere composition. These changes will affect the heat capacity and thermal emission. Some researches show relations between socioeconomic data and temperature spatial distribution. Thus, the aim of this work is explore the correlation between land surface temperature and monthly family income in Porto Alegre. To accomplish this aim, remote sensing will be used, because its images and technologies can be used to monitoring urban environments and quantify urban changes. Landsat 5 TM images from 2006 and 2009 was used to estimate land surface temperature. A maximum error between land surface temperature and air temperature is 1,8 °C. Census data form 2010 was used to discover the correlation between land surface temperature and monthly family income. To analyze this correlation were selected six neighborhoods. The results displayed strong correlation between this variables and the poorer neighborhoods showed higher land surface temperature than wealthier neighborhoods. Urban geometry and difference in build materials could be associated with the results and explain this relationship.
