Resumo	(*)(?)	Previous analysis of PALSAR image suggests a residual morphology related to a possible wave-dominated delta to the north of the Paraíba River mouth. If confirmed, this feature can contribute with studies aiming the reconstruction of relative sea level fluctuations during the late Quaternary in northeastern Brazil. The PALSAR sensor operates in the L band (23, 6 cm) and has good penetrability in ground targets, being able to unraveal morphological features not identifiable using other remote sensing products. Given the relatively recent availability, the application of PALSAR images aiming the recognition of deltaic morphologies has not been tested yet. The goal of this work was to test spatial filtering techniques based on PALSAR images in order to analyze their potential for the recognition of deltaic morphologies, using as an example a residual paleodelta morphology at the Paraíba River mouth. Arithmetic operations and spatial filtering techniques (mean and directional) based on HH and HV polarizations were applied. The results were evaluated by descriptive statistics and target characteristics such as brightness, texture and contrast. The remote sensing techniques used in this work highlighted the residual deltaic morphology of the Paraíba River and helped to characterize its sub-environments. In particular, the HH and HH+HV polarized images processed using spatial filtering techniques were the most efficient products to delineate the paleoshoreline of this deltaic system, and also the sets of beach ridges that prograded during its evolution.
